A powerful earthquake measuring magnitude 6.1 occurs on Java Island in Indonesia:

On April 27, a severe earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck the southern portion of Java, the main island of Indonesia; however, no major injuries or property damage was immediately reported.

Buildings in the capital Jakarta trembled for almost a minute, and the two-story houses in Bandung, the provincial capital of West Java, and the Jakartan satellite cities of Depok, Tangerang, Bogor, and Bekasi shook violently. The Indonesian Meteorological, Climatology and Geophysical Agency reports that the earthquake was also felt in other West Javan cities, Yogyakarta, and the province of East Java.

The organization issued a probable aftershock alert.

While they are common throughout the nation’s vast archipelago, earthquakes are rarely felt in Jakarta.

Indonesia, a 270 million-person seismically active archipelago, is vulnerable to seismic tremors due to its position atop significant geological faults known as the Pacific “Ring of Fire.”

At least 602 people were killed in Cianjur city, West Java, by a magnitude 5.6 earthquake in 2022. Since a 2018 earthquake and tsunami in Sulawesi claimed the lives of over 4,300 people, it was the deadliest in Indonesia.

A tsunami that killed over 230,000 people in twelve nations, mostly in Indonesia’s Aceh area, was caused by an exceptionally strong earthquake that struck the Indian Ocean in 2004.
