E-rickshaws are permitted to operate in Mathura, Agra, by the Allahabad High Court.
In response to E-Rikshaw’s petition, attorney Prabhat Pandey presented arguments. With notifications dated November 7, 2023 and January 8, 2024, the Assistant Regional Transport Officers of Mathura and Agra have prohibited the registration of e-auto rickshaws. The dealers took issue with this. The petitioner had argued that Rule 178 of the Rules did not give the government the authority to forbid registration.
The announcement prohibiting e-rickshaw registration in Agra and Mathura has been overturned by the Allahabad High Court. According to him, the transport officer is not authorised by law to halt registration because of uncontrolled traffic. To manage traffic, they can impose restrictions. It is not possible to halt registration.
Judges Anjani Kumar Mishra and Jayanta Banerjee, sitting as a division bench, issued the ruling while also considering petitions from six auto dealerships, among them Shree Vrindavan Auto Sales, located in Mathura.

The dealers protested to this. According to Rule 178 of the Rules, the petitioner had argued that the government lacked the authority to forbid registration. The Constitution’s Article 19 (1) (g) is broken by this.
According to an affidavit submitted by the government, CNG vehicles—including e-rickshaws and e-autos—do not adhere to traffic laws. There are too many of them, which is creating traffic issues. There are 14748 e-rickshaws, 12346 CNG, three-wheeler rickshaws, and 695 e-autos operating in Mathura alone. Dealerships for e-rickshaws number over 105. In the sake of the general population, a ban has been put in place regarding the Mathura-Agra transportation system.
